Cape Coral

Cape Coral, Florida is located on a peninsula bordered by the barrier islands of the Gulf of Mexico on the west and the Caloosahatchee River on the south and east.  The city features over 400 miles of waterways, with many homes located along canals. This is in Lee County, part of the Fort Myers statistical area. This is the largest area between Miami and Tampa.

Shopping and dining

Cape Coral real estate includes two lovely waterfront shopping and dining areas beginning with Cape Harbor shopping and dining. Restaurants include RumrunnersFathoms and Pignoli on the Harbour. Shops include boutiques featuring clothing and accessories for the Florida lifestyle.

Marina Village at Tarpon Point offers shopping at the Promenade Shops at the Westin Cape Coral Resort. This waterfront community features boutiques and dining at the Nauti Mermaid Dockside Bar and Grill.

The Coralwood Shopping Center and neighboring Coral Pointe offer retail shopping with department shores, salons, banks and other retail businesses. The Bell Tower Shops in neighboring Fort Myers offers major department stores, restaurants and a multi-plex cinema.

Recreation and Parks

Cape Coral is built around water  sports including fishing and boating. The city has seven marinas including the Cape Coral Yacht Basin with easy access from the Gulf.

Many boat owners live aboard their power or sailboats in the Cape Coral area. They have easy access to Pine Island and the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Reserve. Sanibel and Captiva islands with hotels and marinas are located nearby. Boaters can follow the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GICW) as far north as the Clearwater area above Tampa Bay. Fishing is popular in the Gulf of Mexico and Cape Coral offers easy access to some of the best fishing areas.

Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department maintains four nature parks within the city as well as 35 neighborhood parks. The department also offers youth activity programs, camping and kayaking. This Gulf community on the northwest edge of the Everglades offers programs to acquaint people with the natural environment and conservation. The Parks department maintains a dog park and the 18-hole, par-72 Coral Oaks Golf Course. The course has practice facilities and classes for all levels of golfers.


Cape Coral real estate, like many Florida communities, has attracted retirees from the northern climates. This community of approximately 166,000 people also attracts growing families seeking a place in the sun.

The average four-bedroom, three-bath home is available in this area for under $400,000 making Cape Coral an affordable city for families. This is a waterfront community and many homes have their own boat docks. There are multi-million dollar waterfront homes in Cape Coral as well.

A three-bedroom, two-bath home not on the water can be purchased for under $160,000. Vacant lots are available for people who want to build a new home. Beach cottages are available on Pine Island in the $130,000 range.

Cape Coral real estate development began in 1957 as a planned community with homes, condominiums and recreation areas on the water. Cape Harbour is one of the developments that is a yachting community. This area has luxury hotels, condominiums and homes along with the Marina at Cape Harbour. Vacation rentals are available since many people own second homes in this area.

Cape Harbor is expanding with a waterfront section called "Funky Fish Houses" reflecting old Key West designed multi-story homes.

The City of Cape Coral and the school district are major employers in the area along with retail businesses and the hospitality/tourism industry. Careers in the medical field are expanding in this area as well.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Public Schools in Cape Coral are part of the School District of Lee County that has approximately 87,000 students in grades K-12. The district includes Sanibel Island, Pine Island, Fort Myers and other communities in the county. The district includes nine elementary schools with grades K-5, three middle schools with grades 6-8 and three high schools. Charter schools include two elementary, a middle and high school.  The Lee County High Tech Center North School is also in Cape Coral.

Florida Gulf Coast University is one of several colleges located in neighboring Fort Myers.

Lee Memorial Health System and the Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers are the major health care providers. The Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida in Ft. Myers is also part of the system. Doctors and clinics associated with LMHS are located in Cape Coral and other parts of the county. The smaller Cape Coral Hospital is also part of the system.

LeeTran offers community bus services to connect Cape Coral, Ft. Myers and other cities within the county. Busses run everyday and include the Good Wheels buses for people with limited mobility.

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is located in Ft. Myers.
